☮️ Mental health minder

Keeping wellness in check

Thursday, Oct. 22 (11 Heshvan 5787) — I’m taking a point of privilege to say that mental health is everything. This week, I heard Ben Pargman speak about how the suicide of his son, Manny, was shocking because there were no red flags. Manny was popular, handsome, athletic, and magnetic. He lived up to his nickname, Superman. Manny had been accepted into his No. 1 college and was well into his first semester when the Pargmans were told he had died by suicide.

💛 Ben’s talk was captivating. The room was silent for an hour while he talked. As a tribute to Manny Pargman, consider joining the Out of the Darkness Walk on Nov. 1, gathering friends for Manny’s Band Practice, or attending Manny’s Band concert on Nov. 25.

🧠 On Oct. 26, Hineni Toco Hills Mental Health Initiative is screening “BrainStorm: Transforming the Bipolar Landscape,” another way to learn about mental health.

🫶🏼 Remember, 988 is the suicide and crisis hotline. It is open 24/7.

Y’alla,
Logan

Emory Hillel in the headlines

😮 Since the news broke about Emory Hillel dismissing Rabbi Nikki Golomb after a month on the job, several news outlets from The Emory Wheel to The Jerusalem Post have picked up the story. The most comprehensive piece came out of the Forward.

One thing remains: Hillels of Georgia CEO Larry Sernovitz and Golomb have different accounts of what happened – and why. It has kicked off debates around feminism, Zionism, and post-Oct. 7 Judaism.

Daughters talk survivorship

👋🏽 Join the daughters of Holocaust survivors Joseph and Rebecca Bau, Clila and Hadasa, for Shabbat dinner on Friday, Nov. 6.

Joseph and Rebecca Bau’s story of survival, love, art, and resistance was portrayed in “Schindler’s List.” Hear about Joseph’s work as an artist and forger during and after the Holocaust and their family’s commitment to preserving and sharing their parents’ story for future generations.

🎨 Clila and Hadasa will share stories of resistance, creativity, and legacy in this event with 3GATL, a local group of Holocaust survivors and their descendants.

The event is free, but registration is required.

Why is the biggest soccer team in the world talking about Joseph Goebbels?

⚽ The biggest rivalry in international soccer – between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona – has erupted in recent months, as Madrid pushes the Spanish soccer federation to punish Barca for alleged referee bribery.

But the ugly sparring between the clubs took an unexpected turn last week when Spanish league president Javier Tebas entered the fray with a shocking comparison.

👉🏼 “Real Madrid’s management directs an orchestra of mouthpieces and Real Madrid TV leads the singing,” Tebas wrote Oct. 15 on X. “Their score is always the same: select the plays that suit them, repeat the grievance, feed the suspicion and point fingers at the enemies.

“That method recalls propaganda mechanisms exploited by Goebbels, Nazi Germany’s minister of propaganda: systematic repetition, construction of an enemy and subordination of facts to the narrative.”

Real Madrid, which has employed Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham, condemned the remark, calling for Tebas’ resignation from La Liga and the Royal Spanish Football Federation.
