Football Preview: Mount Vernon Mustangs
Mt. Vernon is heading into a big season in year three under head coach Terrence Edwards. The first two seasons have seen immense growth in both play and talent, and the 2026 season should continue that upward trajectory. The team has had two straight .500 seasons, going 5-5 and losing in the first round in 2024 before going 6-6 and losing in the second round of the playoffs in 2025. Over the last decade, the program has made the playoffs every year and advanced past the first round five times. However, the team has never made it past the second round. The team will be returning some high-end players from last year’s squad. Mr. Do-It-All Keon Clealand will be back after posting one of the most interesting stat lines in the state last year. Clealand threw for over 800 yards with 10 touchdowns, rushed for over 700 yards with eight touchdowns, and caught 14 passes for 173 yards and three touchdowns. Additionally, Georgia commit Taurean Rawlins will be back at wide receiver after a 1,395-yard, 17-touchdown junior season. This season, the team will be in Class 2A Region 9, giving the Mustangs an opportunity to battle in a region that doesn’t have a clear front-runner. Fellowship Christian may be the favorite, but with a new coaching staff, Mt. Vernon can close the gap and contend for the region title and beyond.
