Football Preview: Wesleyan Wolves
In the quest for its second state title under head coach Franklin Pridgen, Wesleyan came up short in the 2025 postseason, falling in the second round after two consecutive quarterfinal appearances. The Wolves started the season with a dominant 45-27 win over Commerce before suffering a 41-7 loss to North Hall. They responded with their first win over Elbert County since 2010 after losing the revival game of the Granite Bowl in 2024, and a 55-0 win over B.E.S.T. Academy before the first bye week.
Wesleyan was on the wrong side of a 24-21 nail-biter against Ambassador Christian (NC), but wins over Mount Pisgah Christian, Mount Vernon, and King’s Ridge Christian put the Wolves in position to clinch the Region 5-A Division I title. Unfortunately, the Wolves suffered a 41-14 loss to eventual region champion Fellowship Christian the following week. Wesleyan capped the regular season with a 28-21 win over Landmark Christian and began the playoffs with a commanding 48-7 win over Providence Christian. The Wolves were then eliminated following a 41-6 loss to Prince Avenue Christian in the second round. Wesleyan has the chance to return to form in 2026 with quarterback Jameson Hilton keeping the reins after a 12-touchdown, 843-yard junior season. While running back remains a question, Geno Houchins IV has the opportunity to step up in the receiving game after four touchdowns last year. Defensively, the team returns Carter Overdyke, who was the only non-senior in 2025 to reach 30-plus total tackles.
