Free backpacks and food at Black LGBTQ+ cookout on Aug. 1
In time for back-to-school, families of Black transgender, non-binary, and gender-expansive people are invited to Thicker Than Water, a free cookout, on Aug. 1.
The event, held at Cleopas R. Johnson Park in Southwest Atlanta, will include a community cookout, organizational tabling, and a school supply drive, with free back-to-school backpacks provided by Ariana Grande’s Brighter Days Ahead Foundation.
Free food will be provided by 2 Pieces of Toast while supplies last, but guests are also encouraged to bring their own food.

Thicker Than Water will also include an afternoon performance showcase at the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs across the street, featuring Angelica Ross, 2AM Ricky, Tim’m West, Hanifa Walidah, and DJ Boston Chery.
Thicker Than Water: A Cookout for Black Affirming and Chosen Families, begins at 11 a.m, with performances starting at 3:30 p.m. Guests can register to attend or volunteer on the Gender Liberation Movement’s website.
