Proud to have Jon Ossoff representing Georgia

by Andrew Lewis

As proud Atlanta Jews, we are delighted to have Jon Ossoff representing us and the citizens of Georgia in the United States Senate. That may sound like a simple political statement. It isn’t.

U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff at the May 5, 2024 Yom HaShoah ceremony.

In a moment when American politics increasingly rewards certainty, outrage, and ideological purity, we have come to appreciate something less fashionable: nuance. If our only consideration was whether he agreed with us on every issue, then many people wouldn’t choose him.

That is precisely why we are glad he is in the Senate. Senator Ossoff represents something increasingly rare in American politics—the willingness to occupy complicated ground.

That is particularly important for Georgia’s Jewish community.

Atlanta’s Jewish tradition is complicated in the best possible way. It is deeply connected to Israel, and also deeply connected to the civil rights movement and to the city’s tradition of building relationships across religious and political differences. Many of us were raised to understand that being Jewish means carrying more than one obligation at a time: to protect Jewish life, to oppose antisemitism and all forms of hate, to care about Israel’s security, and to take seriously the Jewish tradition’s insistence on justice and human dignity for all.

Ossoff understands that and has proven such as our Senator. From the Military Families Mental Health Services Act, which expands and strengthens mental health care access for military families, to the Federal Prison Oversight Act, a bipartisan effort that mandates independent inspections of federal correctional facilities, improves transparency, and addresses corruption and abuse within the prison system, our Senator’s work makes us proud.

On Israel and Gaza, he has faced pressure from very different directions. Some Jewish Democrats believe he should take a much harder line against Israel’s actions and U.S. support for its current government under the leadership of Prime Minister Netanyahu. Others believe Democrats from New York to California have become dangerous, questioning Israel’s existence as well as Jewish security. There are also voters who want unequivocal support for Israel and others who believe the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza demands a fundamental change in American policy.

There is no politically comfortable position in the middle of that argument.

Yet Senator Ossoff has continued to navigate it.

That does not mean everyone will agree with every position he takes. It means he recognizes that governing requires holding competing truths together rather than pretending one side of a complicated question doesn’t exist.

And that quality matters beyond foreign policy.

We understand why some people are frustrated with Senator Ossoff. We also understand why some Jewish voters wish he would speak more forcefully or differently on Israel. And we understand why some moderate Georgians may worry that the Democratic Party has moved too far left.

But we don’t think the answer is to demand that Ossoff become someone else.

We want him to remain what he is: thoughtful, independent, ambitious for Georgia, attentive to the realities of American politics, and willing to navigate difficult issues without surrendering to easy answers.

In an age of political absolutism, that is not weakness. It is leadership.

And for these Jews who have called Atlanta home for countless years, it is something worth being proud of.
