Stray Sandy Springs kitten ‘wheels and deals’ his way to a new home
On Friday, Oct. 9, Nicole Motahari and her husband, Brandon Lou, drove to the Abernathy Publix in Sandy Springs for cupcakes and came home with a different kind of treat – a 1-pound kitten.
Lou and Motahari, a journalism and literature teacher at North Springs High School, stopped by Publix to pick up birthday cupcakes for her students on the way from their condominium complex, located about a mile from the store, to the school.

“After we left, suddenly, this woman came up on us, honking her horn like crazy,” Motahari said. “She said, ‘There’s a cat hanging under your car.'”
Despite rush-hour traffic, the couple stopped in the middle of the road to search the vehicle, but could not locate the feline. As they carefully negotiated their way to school, they finally heard a faint “mew, mew” coming from the front right side of the automobile.
The extraction proves difficult
The tiny feline, found in the wheel well of the couple’s car, was not amenable to rescue.
“It ultimately took three firefighters and two police officers from Sandy Springs to free our very small (and apparently very determined) stowaway,” Motahari told Rough Draft. “We believe he must have climbed into the car at our condo complex, Stonington, and managed to hang on for the ride to Publix and part of the way to school. Not exactly the morning commute any of us had planned.”

Motahari and Lou immediately took the yet-unnamed cat to a veterinarian, where they learned he was only about six weeks old and weighed 1.2 pounds.
“Naturally, after all that excitement, we couldn’t exactly send him on his way. So now we have a kitten,” she said. “We are feeding him whenever he wants until he gets up to 2 pounds.”
Kitten, despite size, has skills
Now named Friday Shadow and coined the couple’s little Halloween miracle, its Houdini ways are still very present.

“With a cat that small, there’s no safe space,” Motahari said. “He disappeared under a bathroom cabinet. We couldn’t find him, then we opened the drawer, and there he was.”
Friday Shadow’s arrival and appearance are perfect timing, Motahari said, since she and her husband were married on Halloween.
“Somehow, this tiny black kitten managed to show up just in time to become the most unexpected anniversary present we could have imagined,” she said.
Friday seems to be unaffected by the trauma associated with his entrapment and rescue, spending most of his days cuddling and demanding the couple’s undivided attention.
Motahari said the real heroes of the story are the Sandy Springs firefighters and police personnel who rescued Friday.
“They went out of their way to save a tiny little life, and thanks to them, Friday is now safe, spoiled, and settling into his new home,” she said.
