Upcoming auction to feature works by Keith Haring, Dale Chihuly, and more

Ahlers & Ogletree is pleased to present its Modern & Contemporary Art & Design Auction taking place Sept. 2 and 3, with a preview reception on Tues., Sept. 1 from 5-8 p.m. during which celebrated artist Philip Moulthrop will discuss his work.

This two-day sale brings together an exceptional selection of 20th- and 21st-century fine art, studio glass, sculpture, furniture, lighting, and decorative arts, led by significant works from several prominent estates.

Day 1 – Wed., Sept. 2

Day 1 highlights include important 20th-century fine art, furniture, and design, with works by Viennese Secessionist Josef Hoffmann; midcentury designs by Russel Wright for Thonet, Harry Bertoia for Knoll, Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller, Gae Aulenti for Knoll, Adrian Pearsall for Craft Associates, Alvar Aalto for Artek, Milo Baughman for Drexel, Paul Evans for Directional, Hans Wegner for Getama, Edward Wormley for Dunbar, Mario Botta for Alias, Tommi Parzinger, and others.

European and Italian design is represented by Venini and Murano glass, Cassina, Kartell, Gio Ponti for Ginori, Gaetano Pesce for Fish Design, and modern lighting and furnishings. Highlights from the 21st century include Marcel Wanders for Droog Design, Piero Lissoni for B&B Italia, Rodolfo Dordoni for Cassina, Philip Mainzer for e15, Johan van Hengel for Montis, and two sought-after Roche Bobois “Mah Jong” modular seating ensembles with Missoni and Kenzo Takada cushions.

Fine art highlights include works by Keith Haring, Francis De Erdely, Joan Miro, Fernand Leger, Man Ray, Joe Goode, Rufino Tamayo, James Way, Sandy Skoglund, Herbert Creecy, John “Crash” Matos, Lonnie Holley, Jiha Moon, and others.  

Day 2 – Thurs., Sept. 3

Day 2 features several important private collections and estates. At the heart of the auction is the Estate of Barbara and Sanford Orkin.

Prominent Atlanta philanthropists, collectors, and longtime patrons of the arts, the Orkins assembled a wide-ranging collection of fine art, art glass, sculpture, decorative arts, and design over the course of their lives. 

Among the foremost highlights is Alex Katz’s ‘Wet Night’ (1996), an important large-scale oil on canvas.

A particularly strong selection of American and international studio glass reflects the depth of the Orkins’ collecting interests. Highlights include Lino Tagliapietra’s Oca (2002); Dale Chihuly’s seven piece Cobalt and Oxblood Persian Set with Orange Lip Wraps (1992); Harvey K. Littleton’s Opalescent Yellow Square pair; and works by Toots Zynsky, Bertil Vallien, Stephen Powell, Dan Dailey, Richard Jolley, Martin Blank, Dante Marioni, Petr Hora, David Bennett, Daniel Clayman, Richard Royal, Tobias Mohl, Sally Rogers, Debora Moore, and other celebrated figures in contemporary glass and sculpture.

Also featured is Glenna Goodacre’s monumental bronze “Wednesday”, two coffee table designs by much-celebrated artisans Philip and Kelvin Laverne, and important sculptural furniture pieces by Pucci de Rossi and Albert Paley.  Day 2 also presents several other estates and private collections, including turned wood forms by three generations of the Moulthrop family, with more than 50 works by Ed, Philip, and Matt Moulthrop. Ranging from sculptural vessels and chalices to large-scale bowls in native and exotic woods, the collection celebrates one of Georgia’s most important artistic legacies and the Moulthrop family’s enduring influence on American studio craft.

Additional important work in wood by John Williams, Mark Bressler, and John Jordan. Additional important art glass, including a substantial body of work by Mark Peiser, and again, more notable work by Dale Chihuly, Toland Sand, and Toots Zynsky.
